LONDON (Reuters) - Along with smoking and chronic infections, alcohol consumption is an important cause of several types of cancer, researchers said on Monday.
Excessive drinking raises the risk of cancer of the mouth, larynx, oesophagus, liver, colon and breast. It may also be linked with cancer of the pancreas and lung.
"Alcohol is underestimated as a cause of cancer in many parts of the world," said Dr Paolo Boffetta of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France.
"A sizeable proportion of cancer today is due to alcohol intake and this is increasing in many regions, particularly in east Asia and eastern Europe," he added in an interview.
Boffetta and Mia Hashibe, who reviewed research into the link between alcohol and cancer, found the more alcohol consumed, the higher the risk of developing cancer.
But they advised people to drink moderately, rather than give up alcohol completely, because of its protective benefits against cardiovascular disease.
"Total avoidance of alcohol, although optimum for cancer control, cannot be recommended in terms of broad perspective of public health, in particular in countries with high incidence of cardiovascular disease," Boffetta said in a report in The Lancet Oncology journal.
Instead, the scientists said men and women should limit how much alcohol they drink to reap the benefits but avoid the dangers.
"The most recent version of the European code against cancer recommends keeping daily consumption to two drinks for men and one for women," Boffetta noted.
In developed countries in 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that alcohol caused 185,000 deaths in men and 142,000 in women, but it prevented 71,000 male deaths and 277,000 female deaths in the same year. In developing countries, where there are fewer cases of cardiovascular disease, alcohol was linked with 1.52 million deaths in men and 301,000 in women

Precisely the reason that I try to consume 1-4 beers daily at least 2-7 days a week!!

But anything OVER that amount is CERTAINLY risking the chances of various cancers and do my best not to go over that limit..........although in a couple cases during the year, this will occur for better or worse.

Thanks for sharing Dante,

The key is OBVIOUSLY MODERATION!!

As mentioned in my previous post, definetly better LONGTERM for my health to consume moderate amounts of alcohol rather than totally abstain(due to my family history of heart disease).

However, going over the 3-4 beer limit on any given day is reversing the health benefits more than 5-fold.

Again, the key is MODERATION.

Red wine in moderation is good for you:103631605

............ABSOLUTELY...........as is BEER to a lesser extent.

Hell, I think 1-2 cigs a day is probably better for you than abstaining.............but will not pursue that path.

Wha????????????????? :icon_conf

I can grasp the health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption, but I'm not comprehending the benefit of filling your lungs up with smoke and carcinogens, even a little. :icon_conf :icon_conf

False, from a health perspective. Now as far as entertainment goes, that's another story.

That's only because nobody smokes only 2 cigarettes and very few people smoke 2 full joints, especially if the grass is decent. When comparing the typical amount smoked for people who smoke cigs vs. people that smoke weed -- the weed is the healthier of the options. IMO

That I will agree with. A typical pot "habit" might be 1-2 joints a day, while a typical cig habit is more likely 1/2-1 pack a day. Obviously 1 joint is better than 20 cigs.

On the health scale, one good joint equals 10.23 cigs according to RUETERS "HIGH TIMES" magazine that I subscribe to.

On a personal note, since the 2006 bash have only went over my two drink limit once.............this past Saturday during the IOWA thrashing of Montana.

Thus far today, zero..........but eyeing a cold beer in the fridge as I type this.........this following a day of 1.5 glasses of Blackstone wine last evening(that shit knocks me out).

HEART FEELS TERRIFFIC(off of caffiene for 49 hours currently).
